When the foot is flat, the arch touches the ground with each step, we speak of an overpronation. The foot bends inward at each step and can cause injury, knee, hip and back pain.
With a normal foot (natural pronation), the ground is first touched with the outer edge of the hindfoot, the foot bending slightly inward to absorb the impact of the foot.

The arch of the foot is strongly curved upwards. The feet do not often bend inward, but rather outward (supination), so without protection against the natural shock of the foot. The pressure cannot be distributed evenly across the foot, which can lead to bruising of the heel and injury to the ankle.
